Cyanide Mohan, also known as Mohan Kumar Vivekanand, was a serial killer who preyed on women hoping for marriage. He was born in 1963. He was tried and found guilty for the 2003–2009 murders of 20 women in Karnataka by a Mangalore fast-track court. He was accused of enticing women between the ages of 22 and 35 who couldn’t afford dowries or couldn’t find good spouses.

Without requesting a dowry, Kumar would promise to wed these women. He would give them cyanide pills to murder them, then steal their jewelry. He was also suspected of forgeries and bank loan fraud in addition to murder.

From 1980 to 2003, he taught physical education at primary schools in Dakshina Kannada.

For four years, between 2005 and 2009, he reportedly committed a lot of crimes, but nobody knew what he was doing until sometime when everything fell apart for him. How was he arrested?

How He Was Caught

Anitha, a 22-year-old woman, vanished in 2009, and the police were investigating. Her phone conversations provided more information than they were looking for. Anitha was in communication with another missing girl, according to her phone records. Consequently, someone who was using the girl’s cellphone was found by the authorities.

Eight cyanide tablets, four mobile phones, and jewelry belonging to Anitha were found with Mohan by the police. Mohan Kumar was captured on October 21. In addition to accusing him of raping and killing Anitha, the police decided to reopen the cases of 17 missing girls after his detention.

So, who was Mohan Kumar? He was a criminal.

He was detained in 2009, placed on trial for two years, and found guilty in 2013, receiving a death sentence for the murder of Anitha. The Karnataka High Court, however, commuted his death sentence to life in prison in 2017. His 20th murder conviction came in 2020 after he was found guilty of raping and killing a 25-year-old Kasaragod lady. He received a death sentence in December 2013.

News about his conviction was all over the place, and years after his conviction, people still remember his crimes. The South Canara police transported the confessed serial killer Mohan Kumar to Kodagu. Mohan Kumar admitted to having killed 20 people.

The suspect was brought to Kushalnagar and Madikeri for a probe. In Kodagu, he admitted to killing five women. At the Madikeri bus stand and Kushalnagar, he claimed to have murdered four women. He acknowledged killing Vinutha from Puttur on September 17, 2009, Sharada from Puttur on January 23, 2009, and Baby Nayak from Bantwal on January 3, 2009. He admitted to killing Kasaragod resident Vijayalakshmi on February 29, 2009, at the Kushalnagar bus stop.
