Preet Bharara was born in Firozpur, Punjab, India. He and his family came to the U.S. in 1970 and spent his formative years in New Jersey.
The well-known attorney earned degrees from Columbia Law School and Harvard College in 1990 and 1993, respectively.
Before entering the public sector, he was a litigation associate at two legal firms.
From 2005 through 2009, Mr. Bharara served as Senator Chuck Schumer’s general counsel, overseeing the inquiry into the Bush administration’s termination of U.S. attorneys.
In 2009, he was chosen by President Barack Obama to work as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, a position he maintained until 2017.
