Biography of Jeff Duncan

Duncan was born on January 7, 1966 in Greenville, South Carolina, United States. He attended high school at Mooresville High School. His father worked in the textile business and moved with the family throughout the South as Duncan grew up. Duncan also graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor’s degree in political science in 1988 and was a member of the school’s football team.

After school, Duncan became a branch manager and assistant vice president during a seven-year career in community banking. Until elected to Congress in 2010, Duncan ran his own small business, J. Duncan & Associates, a family-owned real estate marketing firm based in South Carolina, specializing in Real estate prices statewide.

Jeff Duncan’s political career

In 2002, Duncan ran for South Carolina’s 15th House of Representatives District. He won the general election with 61% of the vote. Two years later, in 2004, Jeff was re-elected to a second term without opposition. In 2006, he was re-elected for a third term with 63% of the vote. In 2008, he was re-elected for a fourth term without an opponent. In 2010, he came out of retirement to run for the United States House of Representatives.

Duncan ran for South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District. In the Republican primary, businessman Richard Cash topped 25% but failed to reach the 50% threshold for an overall victory. Duncan placed second in the six-candidate field with 23%. In the runoff election, Duncan defeated Cash 51%–49%, a vote difference of 2,171. He won five of the district’s ten wards, mainly in the south of the district. He won the general election with 62% of the vote, 2% less than John McCain’s 64% of the vote in 2008. He won 9 of the district’s 10 counties, losing only to McCormick (52%–47 %). Duncan spent $935,503; Democrat Jane Ballard Dyer spent $272,698.

From 2012 to 2020, Jeff was continuously re-elected. As of January 30, 2018, Duncan had the most conservative GovTrack ideological score in the House of Representatives. In 2017, his Heritage Action voting scorecard was 100%.

In 2007, Duncan was appointed chairman of the House Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Committee. He was appointed to serve on the Education Financing Study Committee and the Offshore Natural Gas Drilling Study Committee. He also served as South Carolina’s representative to the Southern States Energy Board.

In September 2023, Duncan’s wife Melody filed for divorce from him, accusing him of having multiple extramarital affairs, including one with a lobbyist that Melody believed Duncan are living together in Washington DC; Melody alleges that Duncan “admitted to this adulterous relationship with multiple others, including the parties’ sons and his employees.”
