Who Is Tim Scott?

Tim Scott didn’t inherit a large fortune or a well-known last name like other of his rivals for the presidency did. Instead, he was raised in adversity. However, the senator was able to launch his own company, accumulate a modest real estate portfolio, succeed in politics, and eventually become wealthy, demonstrating that the American Dream is still attainable, even for a low-income Black boy from South Carolina.

When Scott was elected to the U.S. House in 2010, he secured a $174,000 yearly salary, more than double the $60,000 he had been paying himself as the proprietor of an insurance company.

This was his big break. Three months after taking office in January 2011, he sold his company for more than $500,000. Soon after, he began publishing novels, including two with the late South Carolina congressman Trey Gowdy. Between 2017 and 2022, he earned more than $700,000 from his writing.

Ben Scott Sr. and Frances Scott, a nursing assistant, welcomed Tim Scott into the world on September 19, 1965, in North Charleston, South Carolina. When Scott’s parents divorced when he was seven years old, their mother was left to raise Scott and his older brother, who went on to become a sergeant major in the U.S. Army, in working-class poverty. Frances frequently put in two shifts to provide for her family.

Scott, his mother, and his older brother moved into his maternal grandparents’ home following his parents’ divorce. He grew particularly close to his granddad there.

In a special election held in February 1995, Scott competed for the at-large position on the Charleston County Council that Keith Summey had vacated after being elected mayor of North Charleston. In a district with a preponderance of white voters, Scott won the seat as a Republican with about 80% of the vote. Since the late 19th century, he has been the first black Republican to be elected to any position in South Carolina.
