Fox on Thursday said Murdoch will retire as chairman of both businesses at a board meeting in November. Lachlan Murdoch, his son, will take over as chairman of News Corp. and remains CEO of Fox Corp.

“We are grateful that he will serve as chairman emeritus and know that he will continue to provide valuable advice to both companies,” said Lachlan Murdoch.

Fox television network, where Rupert Murdoch was founded next to Fox News, was the first company to successfully compete with ABC, CBS and NBC by airing shows like “The Simpsons.” The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post are both owned by him.

“In my new role, I can assure you that I will be engaged every day in the debate of ideas,” Murdoch wrote. “Our companies are communities and I will be an active member of our communities. I will watch our broadcasts with a critical eye, read our newspapers, websites and books with much interest.”
